Lower Elevations of Oregon and Coast May See Snow This Week

(Manzanita, Oregon) – In a not-so-spring-break spirit, the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting there could be some snow on the Oregon coast and the coast range this week, while even the I-5 Corridor may experience some low elevation white stuff. The coastal region already saw an unusually cold day and dusting of snow earlier this week, but Wednesday and Thursday may bring more, as well as lots of snow to the Cascade mountains.

In a bulletin issued Sunday night, the NWS said these conditions may hamper some spring break travel.
“Cool, unsettled weather this week, with the lowest snow levels since January and early February are expected,” the NWS said. “The pattern is taking hold of southwest Washington and northwest Oregon for this coming week.

“We have already seen five inch snow amounts Sunday afternoon and evening around Mount Hood, and we could see another couple of inches tonight and Monday over the Cascades as snow levels lower to around 1000 feet in the southwest Washington Cascades.”
The NWS said another series of systems will be coming through the region Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly resulting in snow well below 1000 feet Wednesday through Thursday.
The special weather statement covers the coast range routes to the beaches, such as Highway 26, Highway 6 and Highway 18. Snow may show up in coastal towns such as Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Newport, Florence and Yachats. Portland, Salem, Corvallis and Eugene are a little more likely to experience snow.

Snow accumulation is expected to exceed a foot in the Cascades this week. The passes to the mountains will be greatly affected.
“With this being spring break week in Oregon, before traveling be sure to check the latest forecasts and special statements,” the NWS said. “Snow will likely impact outdoor activities this week, especially in the mountains.”
The NWS had no word on the percentage of chance for snow on the coast or coast range. Such cold conditions this late in March are quite rare. But when snow happens this late, it will likely melt quickly along the highways to the coast, if it affects traveling conditions at all. If it happens on the Oregon beaches, it will very likely be quite brief.
