(Florence, Oregon) - Rocky shorelines of the Oregon coast
will be the focus of a special conference offered by the CoastWatch program
in Florence, on December 7 - 8. The event, which is free and open to the
public, will be held at Lane Community College’s Florence branch
(3149 Oak St., next to Siuslaw High School).
On Saturday, December 8, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., speakers
will cover a wide range of topics concerning the science and conservation
of tidepools and other rocky shore areas. While the talks are aimed specifically
at providing background for volunteers in the CoastWatch program, they
would be of interest to anyone who cares about the Oregon coast.
CoastWatch, through which volunteers adopt one-mile segments
of the shore, is a project of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition.

The previous afternoon, Friday, December 7, a workshop
on ocean issues will be led by Robin Hartmann, Oregon Shores’ Ocean
Program director. During the workshop, 3:30 - 5 p.m. (also at Lane Community
College at Florence), Hartmann will provide a thorough briefing on such
current, controversial issues as marine reserves and wave energy development,
and discuss with participants the ways in which citizens can get involved
to make a difference in public decisions on these matters.
Presenters on Saturday will seek to provide CoastWatchers
and other interested citizens with a quick but thorough education in rocky
shore natural history.
Ron Metzger, a professor of geology at Southwestern Oregon
Community College, will kick off the conference by setting the scene with
a talk on “How the Rocks of the Rocky Shore Got There.” He
will be followed by Alan Shanks, biology professor at the Oregon Institute
of Marine Biology, describing “Oceanography 101: Interactions Between
Ocean and Shore.”
Athena Crichton, a marine educator at the Hatfield Marine
Science Center, will provide the audience with a basic introduction to
tidepool ecology.

Other speakers will explore more specific topics. They
include Nancy Nelson, State Parks archaeologist, on preserving Native
American cultural sites found on the shoreline; Jan Hodder, associate
professor at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, on protecting seabirds
from disturbance; and Gayle Hansen, a senior research professor from Oregon
State University, on recognizing the seaweeds of the Oregon shoreline.
Shawn Rowe, a marine education specialist with Oregon Sea
Grant Extension, will provide tips on “interpretation” - providing
natural history information to the public while discouraging behavior
that damages tidepools and their inhabitants. Laurel Hillmann, coastal
resource planner for the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, will
wrap up with a discussion of her department’s current planning process
for Oregon’s rocky intertidal areas, and how citizens can get involved
in both monitoring and in decisions about protecting these resources.

“This
conference has been designed to help CoastWatchers do a better job of
keeping watch over tidepools and rocky shores, and to take an active role
in preserving them,” says Phillip Johnson, who directs CoastWatch
for Oregon Shores. “But we’re glad to invite anyone who is
interested in the natural history of the shoreline, or in becoming a defender
of our tidepool areas. All of the talks will be of general interest.”
The conference is funded by the Eugene REI store along
with Oregon Shores, and is being presented in cooperation with Lane Community
College at Florence.
Box
lunches can be ordered at the time of registration (before 10 a.m.) for
$8.95. Brown-bagging is allowed at the college.
