(Newport, Oregon) - Celebrating Oregon’s Beach Bill, which preserves the state’s entire shoreline for public use, will be the main theme of the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition’s annual meeting on Saturday, October 13, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Hatfield Marine Science Center’s auditorium in South Beach. Registration begins at 12:30. The event is free and open to the public.
Key
speakers on “Bold Actions: Past and Future” include Dave Talbot,
who was director of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department in 1967
and advocated for keeping beaches public; State Rep. Greg Macpherson,
now a candidate for Attorney General; and Jessica Hamilton, natural resources
adviser to Gov. Ted Kulongoski. Oregon Shores staffers will also make
presentations on the group’s work to conserve Oregon’s coastal
region.

Oregon Shores, now approaching its 37th anniversary, evolved from the citizen committee that pushed for the creation of the Beach Bill by the Oregon Legislature 40 years ago.
“Stewardship over Oregon’s public shoreline has been at the core of our mission, so this is an important anniversary for us to celebrate,” says Allison Asbjornsen of Netarts, Oregon Shores’ president. “But there is a lot more to do in the present, from preventing sprawling development that destroys the shoreline to protecting the ocean itself, so we will be looking forward as well.”

Dave Talbot, who became Oregon’s Director of State Parks in 1964, spent his entire career with the department and at his retirement was the nation’s longest-tenured state parks director. He supervised the development of the state’s recreational trail system, and the creation of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department from what had previously just been a division of the Highway Department. He will speak on the events that led to creation of the Beach Bill, and on the political climate of the late ‘60s that gave rise to the innovative legislation that for a time made Oregon the nation’s environmental leader.

Rep. Greg Macpherson has represented the Lake Oswego area for three terms in the Oregon Legislature, and is now campaigning for the position of Oregon Attorney General. An attorney who specializes in employee benefits, McPherson heads the House Judiciary Committee, and served on the “land use fairness” committee which crafted Measure 49, the land use proposal that will soon go to voters. He will speak on current challenges to Oregon’s environment, and on the bold action needed to preserve the coast and ocean in coming decades.
Jessica Hamilton will discuss the state’s current process for actively considering the creation of marine reserves and other protected areas, and Gov. Kulongoski’s positions on wave energy and other coastal and ocean issues.

agenda also includes updates on Oregon Shores’ Ocean, Land Use and
CoastWatch programs.
A brief business meeting for Oregon Shores members only will be held at 11 a.m. in Room 30/32 of the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
