(Florence, Oregon) - Poet William Blake saw infinity in a grain of sand. That would make the subject of an upcoming public presentation and beach walk - sand, and the plants that grow in it - infinitely interesting.
The CoastWatch volunteer program and Honeyman State Park (which also manages the area at the base of the Siuslaw north jetty) are joining forces to sponsor two slide talks and a beachwalk in Florence on Tuesday, March 4, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Bromley Room of the Siuslaw Public Library.
The free presentation is open to all comers.

Marty Giles, who runs the interpretive guiding service Wavecrest Discoveries in Coos Bay and writes a nature column for The Coos Bay World, will provide a slide talk on, quite simply, “Sand.” The subject matter, according to Giles, will cover “what sand is, where ours comes from, what it does while it’s here, and where it goes when it’s done.” Giles (who also happens to be a CoastWatch volunteer) has been a natural history interpreter on the Oregon coast for 30 years. In addition to her own guiding business, she has taught for State Parks, Sea Grant and the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, among other agencies.
Also speaking will be State Parks botanist Noel Bacheller, whose talk will be devoted to “Oregon dune ecology: vegetation patterns, weeds and rare species.” Bacheller, who joined State Parks two years ago after previously working for the U.S. Forest Service, works on projects throughout the state but concentrates on the coast. His particular interests include rare and at-risk species, native ecosystems prior to European settlement, and habitat restoration.
Phillip Johnson, director of the CoastWatch program, and Grant Christensen, a natural history interpreter at Honeyman State Park, will each speak briefly about their respective programs.

After the talks, at about 11:30, the group will adjourn to the north jetty for a beachwalk led by both Giles and Bacheller. It is suggested that would-be beachwalkers dress for the weather (the walk will take place in typical weather conditions, although not if a major storm should strike), and to bring a snack, as the walk will extend through the noon hour.
“This is the first of what we hope will be many collaborations with CoastWatch,” says Shirley Stentz, Honeyman State Park manager. “It’s a good fit, because we are both dedicated to educating Oregonians and visitors about appreciating and conserving our shoreline resources. We’ve always had good cooperation between CoastWatch volunteers and State Parks, and working together on education and shoreline monitoring efforts will deepen that cooperation.”
