Oregon Coast Spring Cleaning Yields Strange, Ugly Finds

cleaning in Manzanita |
(Oregon Coast)
– It’s the Oregon coast’s version of a spring
cleaning, with thousands joining and volunteering to clean up the
state’s 362 miles of coastline.
Saturday’s Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup
brought out 5,245 volunteers to take away the debris left by winter
storms. SOLV (Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism), which organizes
the twice-yearly event, said volunteers removed some 46.5 tons of
garbage and unwanted objects from the Oregon coast.
In spite of inclement weather, volunteers came out
in droves, often shored up in rain gear.
Although many quaint and interesting items turned
up in the volunteers’ SOLV bags, the most significant findings
were lots of plastics debris, Styrofoam and other items injurious
to sea life.

Odd objects
always wind up the most interesting part of the review of each year’s
cleanup. SOLV said oddities found this year include a working cell
phone, dozens of “flip flops,” a refrigerator, an oven
and a 100-foot irrigation pipe. In one area on the central coast,
beach cleaners found over 20 tires, a lot of plastic, fluorescent
light bulbs and two household water heaters.
In Lincoln County,
Guy DiTorrice is the liaison for the cleanup day. He said many tires
were found, as well as a discarded hide-a-bed. A beach trail north
of Newport yielded two truckloads worth of trash, clothing and even
mail left by what appear to be two individuals.
