(Oregon Coast) - If there’s ever a spring weekend that illustrates the “secret season” aspects of the Oregon coast, this would be it.
“It’s absolutely gorgeous out here right now,” said Nehalem River Inn owner Ryan Hamic on Friday afternoon. Friday, most of the coastline is in the 60’s, and it appears as if it will remain so through much of Saturday. Thursday was quite pleasant as well on Oregon’s beaches.

The sun is out, spring has sprung on the Oregon coast, and that season of unusual weather patterns and other natural phenomenon called the “secret season” seems in full bloom. April through the middle of May is increasingly referred to as the “secret season” on the coast because of its crazed weather patterns that change every 30 minutes, the lack of crowds, appearance of Orcas on the central coast, and other wacky displays of nature.

It’s such an enormous change from only about two weekends ago, when SOLV’s Oregon Coast Spring Clean Up saw dustings of snow and hailstorms.
The National Weather Service (NWS) calls for more clear skies on Friday night and Saturday, with a high around 63 on Saturday. It’s expected to get colder later in the day – possibly quite suddenly – as more clouds are likely to come in.
Saturday night calls for cloudy conditions with a low around 43.
Winds for the next two days will be quite calm, adding to the spring-like feel of the beaches.

Suntan lotion is strongly recommended in conditions like these.
On Sunday, the NWS predicts a 20 percent chance of rain after 11 a.m., cloudy, and highs around 55 degrees. Rain gets increasingly likely later in the evening, while winds will remain low.
Showers are predicted for Monday.
But that’s where things get a little tricky, say tourism officials on the Oregon coast.
Keith Chandler, manager of Seaside Aquarium, said that weather predictions that talk about clouds and rain for the day don’t tell the whole story. Spring brings a wild swing to weather conditions that can’t be predicted. He said whatever the forecasts say, often things change fast. One minute will bring a squall. Ten minutes later, the clouds will open up and the sun will shine.

“It changes a lot, and changes drastically,” Chandler said. “Wear layers. Be prepared to take your coat off. It’s very variable.”
Lorna Davis, Executive Director of Newport’s Chamber of Commerce, said the weather pundits on TV may predict one thing, but it doesn’t mean that will hold true for the whole day.
“It’s unpredictable weather year-round,” Davis said. “But especially in spring, things change so quickly. Keep your eye on what’s being said on the weather reports, and be prepared to throw your stuff in the car and head out quickly. You can also take advantage of some great last–minute travel deals too.”
