History Center Celebrates 125 Years of Central Oregon Coast Town

(Newport, Oregon) – “Newport Inc.” is
a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of Newport
as a city, and it’s also the theme of the Oregon Coast History Center’s
annual open house and heritage festival on Sunday, Oct. 21, from 1 to
4 p.m. The Burrows House and Log Cabin museums and the Carriage House
at 545 SW Ninth
Street in Newport will feature a new exhibit, entertainment and displays.

The building for the proposed maritime and heritage center, at 333 SE Bay Blvd., also will be open that Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. hosted by members of the Foundation.
This is the first of several events celebrating the 125th anniversary of Newport’s incorporation as a city in 1882. The City of Newport will host a birthday party at City Hall, Tuesday, October 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. Rogue Ales Public House will host its birthday bash on Friday, October 26 from 9 p.m. to midnight with live music and dancing. The Newport Symphony Orchestra will conclude the weeklong celebration with a performance on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Newport Performing Arts Center.

| Newport's Nye Beach is a walk through living history |
A new exhibit, “Newport Inc.: From Bay to Beach,” tells the story of the growth of Newport into an incorporated city. It will open in the Burrows House Museum during the Oregon Coast History Center open house on that Sunday.

Costumed characters from Newport in the 1880’s will tell their stories to visitors as they move through the Burrows House and Log Cabin museums and the Carriage House. They will participate in an enactment of a ceremony to celebrate the incorporation in October 1882 of the city of Newport with John Baker, newly elected president of the Lincoln County Historical Society, toasting the city in the persona of Sam Case, Newport’s founding father.

Brent Bunker will play music from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s on musical instruments from the same period. Ted Cox will play accordion in the Log Cabin, and Sue Lick will play guitar in the Burrows House. All entertainment and refreshments are free and open to the public. The Lincoln County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Oregon’s Coast. The Society administers the Burrows House and Log Cabin museums in Newport. The museums are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday until October 1 when hours will change to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The research library is open Tuesday through Thursday or by special arrangement. Both museums contain gift shops specializing in books and items related to the history of the Coast. The museums are closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
