Oregon Music & Travel: Huge Coastal Jazz Festival Announced

(Newport, Oregon) – It’s known as the “other big Newport jazz festival:” Newport, Oregon’s “Jazz At Newport” is turning out to be an enormous one.

Newport's Nye Beach

Now in its third year, Jazz At Newport is officially announcing its dates and basic program: September 8 – 10, 2006. Jazz camps for music students happen September 5 – 7.

This fall, the festival is expanding, with jazz activities and performances happening all over Newport, while other associated events will take place leading up to the festival. The “Jazz Party Style” will feature musicians mixing up personnel at the Newport Performing Arts Center – a sort of mix ‘n’ match jam session at different times. The jazz camp student performance is set for Friday, September 8.

Lectures are in the planning stages, as are the "Jazz Dialogues," which are in-depth interview sessions with musicians - a little like the festival's own version of "The Actor's Studio" TV series. Various workshops will also take place, although the details have not yet been finalized.

Last year’s festival included a huge array of musicians and venues, from bigger rooms like the Newport Performing Arts Center and the Shilo Inn, to smaller, more intimate spots like restaurants and even a bed & breakfast just outside town. It featured dozens of jazz groups from a variety of styles, and this year will be no different.

So far, the list of musicians booked for the festival include: John Clayton, Nicolas Bearde, Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford, Jeff Hamilton, Tamir Hendelman, Christoph Luty (Jeff Hamilton Trio), Gary Hobbs, Ken Peplowski, Houston Person, Derrick Sims, Mel Brown, Gordon Lee, Andre St. James, Renato Caranto, Warren Rand, Thara Memory, Stan Bock, Tim McLaughlin, Mile Pardew, Steve Weems, Matt Calkins, JD Monroe, John Britton, Bobby Torres, Al Criado, James Travers, Brian Ward, Matt Carr, Lars Campbell, Rob Davis and Sean Holmes.

Among the venues this year will be Blu Cork Wine Bar, the now-esteemed hotspot for live jazz and other genres that has music year round.

Also in the works are improvisation classes to be held in Newport in the spring, geared towards those interested in being in the jazz camp in the fall – and the return of the Jazz Fridays at the Performing Arts Center lobby during the summer.
