People

A surreal sunset moment in Seaside |
(Seaside, Oregon) - The dedication of a 60 ft. long mural
by artist Roger Cooke of Sandy, Oregon will be held Saturday, September
6 at 1 pm. The mural, painted on aluminum panels, will be mounted on the
north exterior wall of Holladay Drug Store at the corner of Broadway and
Holladay.
The mural depicts scenes of the daily life of the Clatsop
and Nehalem tribes at the Seaside estuary with Tillamook Head in the background.
Included in the painting will be images of historic tribal members such
as Tostum, Chief of the Clatsop Tribe in the early 1800’s. Among
those taking part in the dedication will be Tostum’s descendent,
Diane Collier of Warrenton, Clatsop-Nehalem Tribal Chairwoman.

The ceremony is open to the public, allowing them to not
only see the unveiling but to enjoy storytelling, a carving demonstration
and view other Northwest Native American art in Quatat Park following
the dedication. Featured storytellers are Elaine Grinnell of the Sklallam
Tribe, Roberta Basch, a Clatsop-Nehalem and Puyallup, and Doug Deur, a
Clatsop-Nehalem historian.
Artist’s displaying their works are Phil Zantua,
a Tsimsiam Alaskan wood carver; Steve Shane, Clatsop-Nehalem jewelry maker;
and Roberta Basch, a maker of Northwest Indian Art.
The artists’ works will also be displayed later in
the day at the First Saturday Art Walk, which is sponsored by the Seaside
Chamber of Commerce, from 5 to 8 pm at C by the Sea, Avenue U and Highway
101.

Tillamook Head will figure prominently in the new mural |
Roger
Cooke, the artist who created the mural, works from a studio on the Sandy
River, where he produces paintings, bronzes, illustrations, murals and
portraits. Cooke’s murals are on display in cities and towns across
the country.
“Murals are an opportunity to bring history
to life on a grand scale,” said Tribal Chairwoman Diane Collier.
“They give people a way to get acquainted with local background
in a very compelling manner. Cooke’s work is a significant addition
to our area and a showpiece for both locals and visitors. We hope many
of you will come to the dedication and enjoy learning more from our storytellers
and artists.”
In Seaside, Oregon, on September 6, as part of the
First Saturday Art Walk. The mural is at the corner of Broadway and Holladay.
