Oregon Coast Aquarium Hosts Day to Get to
Know NOAA

Newport |
(Newport, Oregon) - It's a day to get inside the brains
of those who run the most advanced weather prediction and research facilities
in the world. It's a day of educational activities about the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the Oregon Coast Aquarium,
happening Friday, August 22 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The aquarium will host
activities that include an opportunity for visitors to meet with NOAA
scientists and representatives to learn about the products and services
NOAA produces.
NOAA,
a scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce, was
formed in 1970 to warn of dangerous weather, charts seas and skies, guide
the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conduct research
to improve understanding and stewardship of the environment. NOAA's roots
date back to 1807, when the Nation’s first scientific agency, the
Survey of the Coast, was established. Since then, NOAA has emerged as
an international leader on scientific and environmental matters.

NOAA Day at the Aquarium will show what NOAA is doing in
the Northwest through its oceanic and atmospheric science programs. Representatives
of NOAA’s Fisheries Service, Ocean Service, Weather Service, NOAA
Research and Oregon Sea Grant will offer materials and information to
enhance our understanding of the planet.
"We
are excited to be able to offer this experience to our visitors and teachers,”
said Sean Nolan, Aquarium Academic Programs Coordinator and event organizer.
“NOAA is an incredible but often overlooked branch of the government
that does amazing things to help us better understand the natural world.”

The responsibilities of the agency go from the surface
of the sun (Solar Observations) to the depths of the ocean floor (Ocean
Exploration). From weather forecasting, severe storm warnings and climate
monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting
marine commerce with nautical charts, tides and currents, NOAA plays a
vital role in the health of the nation’s economy.
“I’m delighted to support 'NOAA and Our Planet'
day at the Aquarium,” said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher,
Ph.D., Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator.
“It’s a great chance for the public to visit this wonderful
aquarium and to meet NOAA scientists and learn more about our products
and services.”
