Quaint Holiday Celebration in Central Oregon
Coast Neighborhood
(Newport,
Oregon) - It's four weekends of holiday celebrations by the sea, with
something a little different offered for the shopper or the reveler.
The Nye Beach Holiday Celebration takes over the quaint,
time-traveling neighborhood of Nye Beach in Newport - on the central Oregon
coast - happening November 29 through December 20. It’s a mix of
roaming musicians, massive holiday decorations, giving to charities, Santa
Claus, real roasted chestnuts and events that coincide with the festival
itself.
The Nye Beach Holiday Celebration begins on November 29,
with the tree lighting ceremony in the courtyard at the corner of Coast
Street and NW 3rd, in front of Nana’s Irish Pub. The tree lighting
happens approximately 6 p.m. (depending on when it gets dark, so it may
occur earlier). But a continuous stream of musicians will perform at the
courtyard from 2:30 p.m. onward. These include choirs, singers and a Mexican
folk dance troupe.
Also
that day, Santa will be available for the children, sometimes roaming
from store to store, but often in the alcove of the Archway Place. He
will also be around each Saturday, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Nye Beach businesses and homes will be lit up with white
lights and other decorations for the Nye Beach Holiday Celebration, with
the local businesses encouraging residents to also participate in the
visual frivolity. Each weekend of the celebration, local businesses will
host refreshments.
"We’re encouraging the neighbors to decorate,
and not just the businesses," said Linda Briggs, one of the co-organizers
of the event. "It's geared towards the tourists and the locals as
well, to get them to come down and spend a little more time in Nye Beach.
But of course we want to provide the tourists with an alternative to the
hustle and bustle of big city shopping."
Roaming musicians and those in shops will perform each
Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, they will play from 11 a.m. to
7 p.m.
List
of musicians includes Star Time (a group from the Sweet Adelines); Gus
Willeman on saxophone with a guest vocalist; violinist Zach Konowalchuk;
a Bellissimo hand bell choir; celtic harpist Khloella Brateng; the Newport
High School Band; the Newport High School Choir; and Joe Dana on trombone.
More will be announced.
Special events coincide with the Nye Beach Holiday Celebration.
December 6 is Ladies Night Out from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., where
women can leave their Christmas wish list at local retail stores, and
then the men in their lives can return later to purchase them.
December 13 and 20 will feature actual roasted chestnuts
at Café Mundo.
December
13 is also the Nye Beach Wine and Art Walk, where all local businesses
will feature wine tasting. The wines will be then available for purchase
at three local shops: Village Bistro and Deli, Nye Beach Gallery and Nye
Beach Market.
December 20 is the Men’s Night Out from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m. Because they are typically last-minute shoppers, this is the night
they are encouraged to purchase the items from their ladies’ wish
list that was dropped off previously.
Zach Konowalchuk will perform at Village Bistro and Deli
every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The duo Left Turn Only will perform
there on Saturday, November 13 – during the wine walk - from 4 -
6 p.m.
Each business will spotlight a different charity. These
include Food Share, My Sister’s Place, Contro de Ayuda, Salvation
Army, Humane Society, among others. There will be an Angel Tree, where
the name of a needy child and his/her gift wish will be featured, and
donors can then return with that gift for that child and put it under
the tree.
More information can be obtained by calling the Dapper
Frog at 541-265-3764, or Village Bistro and Deli, 541-574-9393.
