North Oregon Coast Boasts Two Oktoberfests
|
Seaside: its Oktoberfest happens Sept. 20 at the Elks Lodge. |
(Pacific City, Oregon) - The sound of the waves in the
distance and the smell of salt air don't conjure images of the German
Bavarian backcountry and its beer halls very well. Still, two towns on
the upper half of the Oregon coast are going German in September, both
holding their first Oktoberfests in what they hope will become an annual
tradition.
Pacific City will hold its Oktoberfest on Saturday, September
20th, and Seaside will host its Oktoberfest on the same day, in the parking
lot of the Seaside Elks Lodge.
In Pacific City, their first annual Oktoberfest is awkwardly
subtitled "Root - Beer - Float, A Black Beer and Root Beer Festival."
It's put on by the newly formed Pacific City Association and goes from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
|
Pacific City: their Oktoberfest happens Sept. 20 around town. |
There will be German music and entertainment, including
an accordion player who will roam around the beer area. For all ages they
will feature a Root Beer Kindergarten, and for adults a Black Beer Garden
with samplings of brews from the Oregon coast as well as around the world.
The Black Beer Garden will be held in the garden area behind Pacific City
Inn.
Register
at the four-way stop at Brooten and Pacific in the center of town. There,
attendees will receive a treasure map and ticket to find glass floats.
Follow the map and balloons to seek your treasure and tour the downtown.
Each business on the treasure map will have several glass floats. If your
tickets number matches, you get the float.

For kids of all ages, there’s the Root Beer Tasting
Contest, where you can test out your palate and see if you can be the
first to identify a store brand root beer. There will be a prize for the
winner.
The official information number is 503-965-4574.
Nearly 100 miles away, Seaside will hold its first annual
Oktoberfest the same day with a definite coastal slant. There will be
food and vendor booths, plus music all day, which includes the national
recording group "Those Darn Accordions" from San Francisco.
Admission is $2 and it’s a fundraiser for the Elks Scholarship Program.
|
Seaside |
The Seaside Oktoberfest runs from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Arts and crafts booths will be among the offerings, along
with beer and wine. Food will include bratwurst, sauerkraut, oysters,
fish ‘n’ chips, shrimp cocktails, gumbo, crabcake and strawberry
shortcake.
From 12 to 3 p.m. it’s Scandinavian County Music
from Astoria. 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. features Portland-based accordion group
Augmented Tones. Those Darn Accordions hit the stage at 6 p.m. and go
until 9 p.m.
It all happens in the Seaside Elks parking lot, in
downtown Seaside, Oregon. 503-738-6651.
