(Seaside, Oregon) – The north Oregon coast town of Seaside is famous for great beaches, family friendly attractions - and recently it’s gaining notoriety as one of the best prepared beach communities on the west coast for tsunamis.
The City of Seaside has been working for several years to promote safety and help residents, and visitors alike, be prepared for an earthquake or Tsunami. Congress appropriated funds for our Tsunami PREP (People Ready with Emergency Plans) - a program that is educating the public, distributing weather radios, creating neighborhood teams, preparing caches of supplies in higher elevations and assisting businesses to train their staff to help visitors.

On the more practical, scientific side, Oregon State University is featuring Seaside as the subject of their recent wave tests at the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Lab. Seaside doesn’t have a Tsunami Museum (like Hawaii does) – but they’re getting close.
Local geologist, Tom Horning, in cooperation with the Seaside Chamber of Commerce, is offering “Geologic & Historic Tours” of the Seaside area.
“Tom’s tour is so popular with locals, they decided to offer it to visitors as well,” said Seaside Tourism Director Mikaela Norval. “People find Tsunamis fascinating.”

Some people fear that making visitors aware of an area’s vulnerability and risk will drive them away. Evidence indicates otherwise.

"Disney World in Orlando is in 'hurricane alley' and Orange County has one of the highest incidents of lightening strikes in the country," Norval said. "Yet, Disney World is one of the top tourist locations of all time. Similarly, Disneyland in California is located in a highly seismic region. Yet, it remains highly popular.
"The Hawaiian Islands are vulnerable to hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, local tsunamis, and distant tsunamis from all over the Pacific. Yet, everyone still wants to go to Hawaii."
Norval
said the education and attitude of local residents and businesses toward
these hazards sets the tone for how others respond. "We want visitors
to know that Seaside, Oregon is the best prepared beaches on the west
coast, and while we can not guarantee that a tsunami will strike during
your visit, as they are very rare, we do want you to know that Seaside
could possibly be the safest beach community due to our level of preparedness."
Seaside is the Oregon coast’s first seashore resort, dating back to the mid-1800’s, and it remains one of the Oregon coast’s most popular year-round destinations with timeless attractions for all ages. Visitors delight amid dozens of specialty shops, art galleries, antique stores, sweet treats, and restaurants that surround the downtown streets where Broadway leads from Highway 101 to the turnaround in the center of Seaside’s famous Promenade, where a sculpture designates the end of the Lewis and Clark Trail.
