It's Fall on the Coast

Oregon Coast New Year's Eve Secrets and Celebrations

(Oregon Coast) – It’s the big blowout of the year on the coast, aside from 4th of July or Halloween, although it does certainly eclipse the latter. The world of the coast comes alive with a particular kind of sparkle and energy, along with the sparkling stuff that flows freely on this night. Locals come out in droves to add more than a little spice to the fun, while tourists complete the picture with their addition to the mix (which ranges from refreshing to the kind of kooky, uninhibited behavior that only comes with mixing booze with getting out of your own home town).

There are dozens of celebrations happening up and down the coastline, from fine dining experiences to the loopy amusement at local wateringholes.

Seaside

Girtle’s Restaurant & Lounge. Wild 'n' wacky dance lounge with live top-40 music and some karaoke. 311 Broadway. Seaside, Oregon. (503) 738-8417.

Cannon Beach

Arch Cape House. For something different on New Year’s Eve, stay in a castle on Oregon's coast and enjoy a truly unique feast. Arch Cape House is a stunning beauty built to look somewhere between a medieval structure and a Swiss ski lodge, and it's a perfect place to get all cozy for the holidays.

Every morning means gourmet breakfasts made by the able hand of owner Barbara Dau. On New Year's Eve, Dau puts together a six-course gourmet bash, which features dishes from around the world and matching wines for each. It's a culinary and wine-tasting trip across the globe. It all ends with champagne by a beach bonfire. Hwy 101 – just south of Cannon Beach. Arch Cape, Oregon. www.archcapehouse.com. 800-436-2848.

Warren House

Driftwood Inn Restaurant & Lounge. Charming, rustic little wateringhole, mostly inhabited by locals. Perfect if you want to start the new year with a serious jolt or local flavor. 179 N Hemlock St. Cannon Beach, Oregon. (503) 436-2439.

Warren House Pub. Family dining by day; fun-tastic bar hangout at night, featuring microbrews from Bill's Tavern. Full service bar with extremely fun and friendly locals. 3301 South Hemlock. Cannon Beach, Oregon. (503) 436-1130.

Manzanita

San Dune Pub (Red Rubber Band performing)

San Dune Pub. Legendary hangout with live music and full service bar. Always loads of fun on New Year’s Eve with some large celebration or another. Laneda Ave., Manzanita, Oregon. (503) 368-5080.

Manzanita’s Wacko Midnight Parade. A little known secret about Manzanita’s New Year’s celebrations is its New Year Parade at midnight, which has been a surreal little local tradition that’s been happening for at least a few years. Generally, people just stagger out of the local bars and perform an oddball parade of sorts – proof again of the kooky and creative side to the fun-loving locals. Now, only the San Dune exists in Manzanita, but some may be coming from nearby The Wateringhole in Nehalem or Sea Shack in Wheeler.

Last year there was, among other things, a large dragon costume. It’s quite a spectacle, says Brian Hines, owner of the motel called San Dune Inn.

This year, the city grudgingly gave it’s okay for the parade, partially on the basis it would happen with or without the permit.

Lincoln City

Raucous crowds at Roadhouse

Roadhouse 101. The party place in Lincoln City, it’s throwing the 2nd Annual Buccaneers Ball, a full-on pirate party.
