Travel Secrets: Coast Has Shortest River in the World
(Oregon
Coast) - Oregon's coast has one for the record books.
The
D River in Lincoln City, on the central Oregon coast, is a tiny
gem hidden in plain sight for the coastal traveler. It's not very
well known, but it shares the distinction of being the shortest
river in the world with one in Montana. It actually had that honor
in the Guinness Book of World Records until a bunch of 5th graders
in Montana disputed it, causing Guinness officials to eventually
hand that honor to both in the 90's.
Flowing
a mere 120 feet from Devil's Lake, it was allowed to remain the
shortest when the Guinness folks recognized that, depending on tidal
conditions, it's not always that long.
In this shot,
during a dry spell in October 2003, the D River is not only really
short: it's practically nonexistent. There's a dry patch where the
stream usually meanders into the sea. In fact, on this day, the
river barely made it as far as the bridge that passes over it.
Also of interesting
note: the ocean was particularly crazy and stormy on this day, yet
the D River refused to meet the same expectations.
