Oregon Coast Full with Tourists
Running From Heat, Taking Up Rooms
 |
| Seal Rock beneath the sun |
(Oregon Coast) – With the inland part of Oregon baking
in 90-plus temperatures, the coastal region is a very busy place Monday.
Highway 101 is packed with cars and occasional traffic jams, and the lodgings
are booked up almost completely.
It’s like a busy summer weekend for the Oregon coast
– but it’s just the beginning of the week. Many business owners
on the coast say it’s going to just continue.
In Manzanita, the sky is as blue as possible and there
is almost no wind, with temperatures clocking in around 81 degrees at
5:30 p.m. The beaches here fairly bereft of people, considering the mass
of traffic that has been typical Monday up and down the main highway,
even along Manzanita’s largest street, Laneda Avenue.

On the central coast, however, things are markedly cooler,
with fog socking in much of Newport, and towns like there and in Lincoln
City reporting 61 degrees.
The dividing line seems to be Pacific City, where it’s
still 70 degrees. But only 20 miles away, Lincoln City is almost ten degrees
cooler.
The forecast for the north coast calls for continued warmer
temperatures for the next three days. Tuesday should be around 81 as well,
with low winds clocking in at no more than 10 mph. On Wednesday, things
should be cooling off a bit more, with things dropping to the low 70’s.
The forecast for the central coast is still similar, according
to The Weather Channel, even though the much-anticipated fog and cooler
air have rolled into that area already.

the heat of 80-plus degree temps |
All this tropical weather for the north coast and cooler
temps for the central coast has resulted in a major rush of activity,
as many valley dwellers run for the nicer conditions.

It all began mid-day on Sunday, when weather reports began
firming up that things would stay hot in Portland and cool off to varying
degrees on the coast. As of around 3 p.m., most lodgings on the coast
said they were expecting more calls, but that surge hadn’t arrived
yet.
Then about 4 p.m., something clicked, said Brian Hines,
owner of San Dune Inn in Manzanita. “Have had five walk-ins and
it’s only 4 p.m.,” Hines said on Sunday. “The Spindrift
Inn and the Bunkhouse down the road are full.”
Then close to closing time, more people surged in, asking
for rooms. “The second surge just about done me in last night,”
Hines said. “A total of 10 walk-ins. Idahoan's, Swiss - you name
it. Gone from 2 to 10 rooms occupied.”
 |
| San Dune Inn, Manzanita |
Hines anticipates putting up the no vacancy sign later
on Monday night.
Down in foggy Newport, Marianne Barrett is manager of Elizabeth
Street Inn, an upscale hotel overlooking the waves of Nye Beach. She’s
ecstatic. “We are completely full for tonight and the next two days,”
she said. “Life is good.”
People have been walking into lodgings in droves, though
a few are calling in reservations. And most places are filled up –
if not already there.
“It has been very busy here today with calls from
those in the valley looking for relief,” said Chris Bendickson,
manager of the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Seaside.
 |
| Weiss' Paradise Suites, Seaside |
“We have had some calls this morning and our suites
are almost booked through Saturday,” said Donna Weiss, or Weiss’
Paradise Suites in Seaside. “However, I still have quite a few openings
in our vacation rental units: one and two bedroom duplexes and three bedroom
houses.”
In Lincoln City, Kevin Winters – of D Sands Condominium
Motel – said business is brisk and getting more so. “We could
potentially be full every day this week.”
Weiss said some have been worrying about finding air conditioning
at her place.
 |
| Lincoln City |
“I explain to them it isn't usually a problem, especially
at this time of year,” Weiss said. “It gets so cool overnight
and if you close the window, doors and blinds or drapes in the morning,
the units will stay cool all day. Our units have ceiling fans and we do
have extra small fans in all units. Today – Monday - will be the
hottest and then it will cool down, so the worst is this afternoon.”
Most lodgings on the coast have been reporting being at
capacity for Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday night because of the heat.
Here is a sampling of those who have reported openings still, for those
still looking to get away from the valley. Please click on their websites
