All through
December and January, BeachConnection.net
will provide a series of really unusual angles and a constant stream
of surprises about the Oregon coast, called “Freaky Oregon
Coast Facts.” Each week, dozens of odd and mind-blowing factoids
and trivia about the area will be released onto the web, covering
its history, beach spots, weird science, weather, entertainment
and of course much about haunted places on the coast and other paranormal
legends.
“The stuff
we’re collecting right now is downright freaky at times,”
said editor Andre’ Hagestedt. “I believe we’ll
have some 200 really trippy things to talk about over those two
months.”
Tidbits
to look forward to include items on celebrities on the coast, rogue
theories on historical events, the recent discovery of a new reef
for surfers, wild weather facts, strange life forms from and near
the sea, and much more.
“If you
really get into science, you start to realize the real stuff is
way weirder than science fiction,” Hagestedt said. “That’s
the interesting delight about marine science. One good example is
that this certain species of octopus at the Seaside Aquarium recently
laid about 3,000 eggs, and they’re all hatching now. There
are some other interesting surprises lurking there as well.”

Odd facts to
look for include:
- The hotel
that once had a picture of Pat Boone on its marquee, wearing a
pink leisure suit
- Where to find sand that glows, or sand that sings
- The “mini summer” in the middle of February
- A castle on the coast
- The eerie rumors behind the legend of buried treasure in Manzanita
- Lava flows hundreds of feet high that formed much of what you
see in Oregon and on the coast
- The mysterious “green flash” at sunset
- A list of secret shipwrecks and hidden ghost towns on the coast
- What 70 pound sea creature can squeeze through a hole the size
of a silver dollar
- Where to find more whole sand dollars than anywhere else on
the coast
- World record-holding landmarks on the coast
The
list is long, varied and either humorous, varying degrees of unusual
or at the very least interesting.
“There’s
a lot more to the Oregon
coast than meets the eye,” Hagestedt said. “And
here will be proof.”
The list of
facts and oddities will appear in the middle of the week at BeachConnection.net,
throughout December and January.
The first one
begins Monday with a host of shockers
about the weather patterns of the coast, including the little
known two weeks of warm, summer-like conditions that happen most
every February, among other surprises.
