(Oregon Coast) – With the weather as glorious as it has been lately, and tourists still staying away from the coast in great numbers – as they traditionally do this time of year – May continues to be one of the best kept secrets on the Oregon coast. But this weekend, just before the big summer season kickoff, tends to be one of the deadest.
“The weekend before a major holiday can be a bit slow,” said Carolyn Plummer, owner of Pacific Retreats Vacation Rentals in Lincoln City. “But I wouldn't say it’s dead. But it is a great time to come with plenty to do and traffic may be lighter, too.”
If
you want great, even fantastic lodging and dining deals, no crowds and
practically zero traffic, at a time when the weather is likely to be stellar:
go just before the big weekend. The week and weekend before Memorial Day
weekend is traditionally quite slow on the coast, while weather is usually
quite wonderful. It’s the “Lost Treasure” of Oregon’s
coast in early and mid May.
Lodging prices are still near winter rates, even just a week before the holiday weekend. Many lodgings are also happy to dicker in price a bit to coax people in for what is an otherwise dismal business weekend for them. Economic motivations will create some interesting deals in these three weeks before the holiday.

This time of year is known as the “Secret Season,” because of the lesser crowds, increasingly pleasant weather, better lodging deals and less traffic. It truly is a lost treasure waiting to be discovered by the average beachgoer.
“I think this weekend would be a great weekend to miss a lot of the crowds,” said Dianna Dunlap, who runs several hotels in Lincoln City, including one that’s debuting over the holiday weekend. “We have small locations - all oceanfront - so quieter than the big hotels.”
“As far as this weekend in Manzanita, we have the big golf tournament,” said Amy Dunlap, at Sunset Vacation Rentals in Manzanita. “Should be a great weekend here. Rockaway should be pretty dead but great for a quiet getaway.”
In Depoe Bay, fishing is king, said Peg Leoni, owner of Trollers Lodge. “This weekend is great,” Leoni said. “Have one room left for Friday and two for Saturday. Thanks be to halibut and all the other little fishies!”

Plummer urges people to come out to the coast this weekend,
spotlighting the plentiful amenities of the Lincoln City area with little
or no crowds. “Many people don't realize how great Devils Lake is
for fishing, boating and enjoying the beautiful views,” Plummer
said. “So even if it is a busy holiday weekend, there's always locations
that are less populated.”
Some people have caught on to the secret, like those regulars at Starfish
Point in Newport. “As for this weekend, we are fully booked
and have been for at least a month,” Emerick said. “However,
starting Sunday, we are very slow. We would love to see some activity
here next week, for sure. We might even be willing to make some sweet
deals for the right people for Sunday through Thursday nights.”
In Cannon Beach, Terri Ferguson manages the Inn at Cannon Beach. She’s full for this weekend, as is Brian Hines’ cozy Manzanita motel, the San Dune Inn.
