(Oregon Coast) - Saturday, more than 5,100 volunteers turned out to participate in the 22nd Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup, snagging a record amount of trash from the sands of the Oregon coast.
The
entire Oregon coastline, 362 miles, was cleaned of debris that had accumulated
during the stormy winter months. Volunteers removed an estimated 54 tons
of trash from Oregon's coastline.
Many interesting items turned up in the volunteers’ SOLV bags, including a shopping cart, a washing machine, a refrigerator, a water heater, a pocket knife, a car seat, a Ford Bronco, more than 60 tires, and a staggering number of plastic bottles – literally thousands and thousands. Also found was a 10-foot piece of plastic shedding that had to be winched in order to be removed from the sand.
SOLV spokesman Barb Ardueser said the largest concentration of water bottles were in the Fort Stevens area just south of Astoria, Sand Lake (near Oceanside) and the Florence area.

The washing machine and water heater were found near Florence. The Ford Bronco, along with around 19 tires still on the rim, were discovered around Reedsport. The refrigerator was picked up from a beach near Nehalem.
Newport beach expert Guy DiTorrice said some interesting things were dragged off the beaches in that area. “Really cool, labeled, plastic bottle of 100 percent apple juice - in Japanese,” DiTorrice said. “In fact, lots of plastic bottles, mostly domestic drinking water.”
DiTorrice said volunteers found three tires attached to a chunk of wood that was once a dock, all of which ended up on top of one of the ancient stumps near Thiel Creek (south of Newport). These had to be hauled off the beach via ATV by the Newport Volunteer Fire department.
14 disposable cigarette lighters were scattered over two miles, DiTorrice said. “And a fair amount of pieces of foam and pieces of nylon rope,” he added.
Beach
volunteers braved hard rain and wind in some places, such as in the Seaside
area. Residents and officials reported seeing a lot of extremely wet people
wandering the beaches.
In Newport, however, conditions were not quite as savage. Volunteers there braved periodic rain but little wind, and no rainstorm was quite as heavy as on the north coast.

5,472 volunteers removed 46 tons of trash at last year’s spring cleanup. The cleanup started in 1984 and is one of two annual beach cleanups organized by SOLV – the other is in the fall.
