Godzilla, Other Oddities, Found at Oregon Beach Cleanup

(Oregon Coast) – More than 3000 Oregonians gathered on the Oregon coast Saturday for the 22nd annual Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup, working to scour the beaches from the Washington border to the top of California.

Volunteers collected 42,183 pounds of debris that had accumulated during the summer months on these beaches.

"The fall cleanup was a success only because of the dedicated volunteers that make it happen,” said SOLV Outreach Coordinator Gerik Kransky, “The event’s potential pitfalls were overcome by thousands of Oregonians giving one Saturday to ensure clean beaches for all.”

Along with SOLV, the cleanup was coordinated by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and local coastal haulers.

Always a highlight, however, are the reports of strange things which get picked up with the litter and manmade debris.

In Gold Beach a volunteer discovered a small plastic Godzilla toy. Near Pacific City, the leftover carcass of a grand piano that had been burned added a large degree of spice to the day.

Other oddities included crab pots, tires and a water heater in the Gold Beach area, a riding lawn mower found in Newport, and window frames and tires picked up from the beaches of Florence.

Other surprises in the past have included an entire van, other motor vehicles, a boat, a refrigerator from Korea and even a kitchen sink. In the spring cleanup, volunteers found a working cell phone that had been lost on the beach, said SOLV official Dianna Weston. They called the owner and returned it to him, grateful that it had been found but still unaware how he had lost it.
