Scott Cossu Performs on North Oregon Coast Next Week

(Seaside, Oregon) - Master pianist Scott Cossu will combine talents with guitarist Lonnie Mardis on Friday, July 6 at the United Methodist Church in Seaside, Oregon. They will be joined by the newly crowned Miss Oregon 2007 at her first official appearance. A reception will follow. The show happens at 7 p.m., and the church is on the corner of 3rd and Holladay in Seaside.

Scott Cossu is a pianist, flautist, composer and arranger, and has been on the Windham Hill recording label for over a decade. His work includes albums “Still Moment,” “Wind Dance,” “Spirals,” “Islands,” “Reunion,” “Stained Glass Memories” and his latest CD, “Emerald Pathway.” Cossu’s work also includes scores for the acclaimed PBS series “Nova,” film documentaries and nature videos.

His years of classical training and his study of ethnic music from Sudan, Thailand, China, Rumania and Ecuador result in a unique music that has been performed in concerts worldwide and recorded since 1981.

Lonnie Mardis, a native north-westerner, has performed as a solo artist, guitarist, composer, arranger, and music educator. He also plays as the Lonnie Mardis Jazz Trio, Quartet or variety Big Band. Mardis leads the Seattle Central Community College Jazz Orchestra and is the music director for the Federal Way Symphony Big Band. He is featured on many albums of Northwest artists. He keeps a busy schedule from his home base in Seattle, playing with such notables as Scott Cossu, Rob McConnell,
and the Seattle Composers Alliance Big Band. Mardis has also worked with Roger Fisher of “Heart” fame.

The Cossu/Marids concert is a fundraiser for Northwest Performing Arts, Inc., a nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to enriching the community through performances and performing arts education. Admission is $15 per person or $25 for a family. Admission fees may be applied to annual membership dues, and members will have free or discounted admission to future events. Membership is $25 per year for

Musician, composer and recording artist Scott Cossu is hard to categorize. His background in jazz and rhythm and blues, combined with his years of classical training and his study of ethnic music from Sudan, Thailand, China, Rumania and Ecuador result in a unique music that has been performed in concerts worldwide and recorded since 1981.

Scott has produced many successful albums and has toured the world, giving more than 1000 concerts. His latest recording projects include a fusion of classical and jazz styles. Scott’s work also includes scores for the acclaimed PBS series Nova, film documentaries and nature videos.

He explains, "Having lived in the Northwest for most of my life, it has come to be more than just home,” Cossu said. “Here is where my family grows, where I compose, and spend time with friends. In the mountains, along the waters, and in the mossy forest I seek out solitude and comfort, and renew my spirit.

“I have been inspired by the lushness and beauty the great Northwest has to offer. I hope to bring you a glimpse of these musical inspirations and give you a walk down a wondrous ‘Emerald Pathway.’

Cossu describes his musical influences as a mixture of jazz and world beat.

"Most of my past recordings have showcased my love of Latin rhythms and world beat,” Cossu said. “This time around, I was in the mood for a little chamber music, with a touch of classical and a hint of jazz. All of these genres have been part of my recordings and used in concert since the 70’s. With the new millennium here, and our world in a new awareness since September 11, something to soothe the heart and soul seemed to be my best offering.”
