Creatures of the Night Haunt Oregon Coast Aquarium, October 28

(Newport, Oregon) – It happens every year at this time. The Oregon Coast Aquarium closes its doors early and quietly mutates into something very strange, even eerie in moments. Its lovely wooded grounds are transformed into an ominous landscape with haunted caves and foggy courtyards, summoning all manner of ghosts, ghouls and creepy characters to partake in its annual soiree of the sinister.

On October 28, the Aquarium will close at 4 p.m. and reopen to present the14th annual Creatures of the Night, from 7 to 9 p.m.

This year’s theme, “Monsters Incorporated” will offer activities for all age groups and for tourists and locals alike. Young children will find interactive games and activities in the main indoor galleries. For older children there are spooky haunts lurking in the outdoor caves and creatures hiding in the shadows of the nature trail.

Visitors will enter the main entrance through the “Nightclub of the Damned,” where they will be served creepy concoctions while waiting in line. Once they pass the threshold of the main entrance they will enter a forest from “Hansel and Gretel,” where a witch - accepting donations for Lincoln County Food Share - resides in a house made of candy. A costume contest will be held in the café, where volunteers will gather contact information and judges will announce winners at the end of the evening. It is not necessary to be present at the time of final announcements.

Other activities include:

- Andre Hagestedt, Editor of Beach Connection.net, will tell chilling tales about “Ghosts of the Coast” in the Gleason Event Room located in Passages while sharks lurk in the viewing window behind him. These interactive stories will be appropriate for slightly older children and adults. This talk will be especially atmospheric with the sharks nearby, whose eyes glow an intense red when hit by the aquarium’s nighttime lighting. More on that story here...

- Eric Nepom with the Pirate Improv Theatre Show will perform in the Qwest Theatre. The shows, sponsored by Marine Discovery Tours, are for all ages.

- “Anon”, a local belly dance instructor, and her students will perform Middle Eastern style dancing with veils throughout the Aquarium.

Admission is substantially reduced for the event with Aquarium members entering free. Nonmembers who donate a new, unwrapped toy or 2 items of canned or packaged food for Lincoln County Food Share, will enter free also. All other adults pay $2 and kids $1.
