Public Warned About Jet Debris Washing Up on Oregon Coast |

Public Warned About Jet Debris Washing Up on Oregon Coast

(Oregon Coast) – Officials from the Air National Guard are warning those visiting or living on the Oregon coast to not touch any debris from a crashed F-15 Eagle jet fighter that could wash up along the beaches.
The
jet crashed offshore about 15 miles from Cannon Beach on June 26.
Ocean currents may carry wreckage debris down to the central Oregon coast, to towns like Lincoln City or Newport.
If you are walking on the beach and spot something from the wreckage, you are not to touch it. Report it to authorities immediately.

“Some materials used in the aircraft require caution when handling them,” said Air Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Mike Milord in an alert. “Anyone who finds debris from the incident should not touch it, and they should call local law enforcement or the U.S. Coast Guard to report the finding.”

Sprague, owner of Aviation Adventures in Seaside, could see some of the
recovery effort from the air. He emphasized the importance of not touching
any found debris because future crashes may be avoided by examining the
wreckage. “The safety of future flights could depend on what they
find,” Sprague said.

The pilot, 34-year-old Maj. Gregory D. Young of St. Helens, Oregon, died in the crash. He was part of a training exercise with the 142nd Fighter Wing, which included four F/A-18s from a Marine Corps Reserve unit from Texas. The dogfight exercise was designed to sharpen fighting skills by giving the pilots experience in flying against a different kind of aircraft.
The crash happened in the early afternoon on June 26, and Young’s body was found by early evening. Officials did not release that fact until the following day at the request of the family.
So far, there have been no reports of debris washing up on Oregon coast beaches.
