Karaoke
Becomes ‘GaryOke’ In Oregon Coast Town
(Lincoln
City, Oregon) – The Lincoln City nightlife hotspot Maxwell’s
Restaurant and Lounge recently made some additions to its weekly
roster of karaoke fun, and will host a benefit utilizing the often
goofy entertainment form.
KJ Gary recently joined
Maxwell’s, and updated the bar’s song catalog to over
30,000 titles.
Aside from charging
things up at Maxwell’s and turning the place into his own
private “GaryOke,” Gary has created the “Cabaret
of Stars” Karaoke contest at Maxwell’s. It begins Tuesday,
April 25th at 9 p.m. and will run every Tuesday until May 23rd for
semi-finals, with finals being held on Wednesday, May 24th.
There will be a $10.00
registration fee, but the entire fee will be donated to “Let
There Be Arts,” a non-profit organization that promotes the
Arts for K-12 in the Lincoln City Schools.
Gary will oversee things
as the Master of Ceremonies for the event, with three unnamed judges
casting their votes. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second
and third places as well as some gifts provided by both Maxwell’s
and other local businesses.
Each week will be a different
theme for the contest, but the basis for the judging will always
be the same.
“This is going
to be a karaoke contest and not a talent show,” said Gary
in a press release.
Some points will be given
for stage presence and appearance, but most points will be awarded
based on song presentation, as in rhythm and pitch. Contestants
will not be marked down for looking at the words or for not leaving
the stage.
“That’s not
karaoke,” said Gary. “Each night will be themes such
as select your own song, dress like and sing a song by your favorite
performer; Scaryoke (where your song is picked for you); and Opposites
Night, where women must sing a male performer’s song, and
vice-versa. There won’t be any elimination until the fourth
week and there is a limit to the first twenty contestants to sign
up.”
KJ Gary hosts from 9
p.m. to 1 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays. Maxwell’s
is at 1643 NW HWY 101, in Lincoln City. 541-994-8100.
