Central Oregon Coast Town Goes to the Dogs for a Day
(Lincoln
City, Oregon) – Mutt Masters is back on May 19, and it means the
central Oregon coast town of Lincoln City will again be dogged by a large
pack of canines and their owners.
As in past years, there will be more than a dozen different contests for most every dog. This year, however, the event will be joined by “Velvet the Wonder Dog,” known from the Lincoln Memorial to Lincoln County as the dog who saved her people on Mt. Hood earlier this year during a harrowing ordeal while stuck on the mountain. There will even be an appearance by the BARK Dogs rescue canines from Mt. Bachelor.

Velvet – and her person Matt Bryant – will be the recipients of the inaugural, “America’s Most Loyal Dog” award. Sponsored by the Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau, the award recognizes a dog’s greatest trait: loyalty. After staying with her three human companions despite a roaring blizzard on the side of Mt. Hood, Lincoln City officials have said “we feel there’s no dog more deserving than Velvet.”
Events and categories are extensive. There are physical contests starting at 12 p.m., which include tail wagging, musical chairs, Frisbee catch, dancing dogs, retrieving a treat from underneath a towel, unusual pet tricks, most passionate dog kiss, wet dog shake, best singer and mutt chorus at 1:15 p.m. There is no charge to be part of the dog choir.

Demonstrations take place at 1:45 p.m., with agility and obedience training with Sue Green. This includes meeting the BARK Dogs from Mt. Bachelor.
At 2:15 p.m. there will be the big doggie show, with best dressed, longest tail, biggest ears, “Dog/Human Look-a-Like Contest,” with best of show taking place at 3 p.m.
Lincoln City Vacation Homes Something for everyone: smaller homes with a view to a large house that sleeps 15. There is still more. The town has a whole day on tap for dogs and their people, even when Mutt Masters isn’t underway. This is a new aspect to the festival.
The
event will kick of from its new location at Taft Elementary School (1545
SE 50th St. Lincoln City) with a group dog walk at 10:30 a.m. down to
the beach, including a brunch stop for the dogs and their people. Additional
cost is $5.95 and prior registration is required.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the you-wash facility Lucky Dog (660 SE Highway 101) is where you can give your dog a nice bath and get the sand out of their coat.
In the evening, drop by Tiki’s on 51st (1005 SW 51st) where you and your dog can dine on the deck, while sampling an array of beach food and drinks.
Fees increase with the number of events entered. One to three categories: $10; four to six: $20; seven to nine: $30; 10 and up: $3 per event.
Fees
are based on total number of events, not events per dog. (Example: If
you have two dogs in four events each, that would be eight total events
for $30.) Each registered dog may be accompanied by one person for free.
Admission for others is $2 per person or $4 for a family.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, the Central Coast Humane Society, DoveLewis and BARKDogs.
