Oregon Coast News Briefs and Weather

Oregon Coast Weather Watch Showers and wind are predicted for most of the weekend on Oregon’s coast. The National Weather Service says a wind warning is in effect through Saturday afternoon on the northern Oregon coast and southern Washington coast, especially on coastal headlands. Exposed beaches may gust as high as 45 mph, and the headlands could get hit with winds as high as 65 mph.

Traveling to the coast may also be a slight problem. There is a snow advisory in the Cascade Mountain Range, which also means there is the possibility of some snow in the coast range mountain to and from the beaches. More on the weather here.

The snow is not likely to stick, however, say forecasters.

Name a Seal Pup for a Buck Seaside Aquarium is about to experience the joys of motherhood, and they’re giving the public a chance to participate.

One of the seals at the aquarium is pregnant, and will give birth sometime in May or early June. So the Seaside Aquarium is holding a special program where you can name the new seal pup.

Manager Keith Chandler said for $1, you can purchase raffle tickets to get the chance to name the new pup. When it’s born, the raffle winner will get to pick the name (as long as it meets the approval of aquarium staff). Proceeds from the raffle sale will go to The Friends of Haystack Rock, which helps support the Haystack Awareness Program in Cannon Beach, where educators set up shop at the foot of the rocky monolith and inform the public on natural aspects of the area. Chandler said multiple entries are allowed. 503-738-6211. More here.

Book About Coast Launched A wonderful new coffee table book called “Cannon Beach: The Art, Cuisine, History & Atmosphere of Oregon’s Favorite Coastal Village” has been released recently to ecstatic reviews. It contains scores of gorgeous photos, a fascinating history section and a mouth-watering section with recipes from what appear to be almost all of Cannon Beach’s eateries. The book was put together by CB residents Adam Carlsen and Donald Masterson, and features works from famous Cannon Beach residents such as Ursula K. LeGuinn and Terry Brooks. Justice for Local Business Man Also in Cannon Beach, one local businessman was having troubles with big insurance companies, and when the regional press found out, his problems seemed to dissipate. David Johnson, owner of Cannon Beach Fultano’s Pizza, had put money down on a very eco-friendly electric car, with the intent of using it as a delivery vehicle. But he found no insurer would cover it commercially, as this type of car is too new. Johnson got wind of a pizza delivery company in Portland who did get coverage for their electric cars, smelled something fishy in the insurance industry, wound up on TV and radio and boom: someone appeared who would insure him. 2nd and Hemlock. 503-436-9717.

Movie Crew Brings Monsters to Oregon Astoria is the subject of yet another movie, this time the retelling of a seminal H.P. Lovecraft tale. The movie “Cthulhu” was filmed there recently, and is wrapping up postproduction. It is based on Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” and filmmakers were delighted to discover a rogue theory that the story was actually inspired by Astoria and not a town on the East Coast. They were further delighted to find real similarities and coincidences between the two towns. More on that movie here.
