The Aquarium was lauded for its natural setting, interactive
displays, touch pool and Passages of the Deep, an exhibit that runs through
a 200 foot underwater tunnel with live sharks, rays and skates. The article
also highlighted the Aquarium’s educational programs including its
educator-led kayak tours and school lab programs.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is the only aquarium on the list
not located in or near a major metropolitan area. “Our location
is both an advantage and a challenge,” said Aquarium President Dale
Schmidt. “The beautiful setting is a little off the beaten path,
which makes it all the more incredible that we continue to draw people
from all over the world and receive national attention for the quality
of our exhibits and educational programs.”
The full Top 10 list includes:
1.
Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey , California
2. Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta
3. John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago
4. New England Aquarium, Boston
5. Florida Aquarium, Tampa

7. Atlantis Marine World, Riverhead, New York
8. Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport , Oregon
9. SeaWorld Adventure Parks , Orlando/San Antonio/ San Diego

The Aquarium is also listed among the top ten Aquarium’s
by USA Today and Coastal Living.
In developing its top ten rankings, Parents Magazine relied
on site visits to the top aquariums, the recommendations of an expert
panel and the results of an exhaustive survey that evaluated the number,
creativity and educational aspect of each aquarium’s interactive
features. It also graded the aquariums on the quality and kid-friendliness
of their exhibits, services (like changing stations), staff and educators,
special programs for groups and families, and conservation efforts.
