(Wheeler, Oregon) – There is a legend in the north Oregon coast hamlet of Wheeler of a paranormal kind of serendipity called the “Wheeler Moment,” where interesting coincidences just seem to happen with startling regularity. Part of this is legend involves needing a problem to be solved or wishing for something, and in an unusual way, the answer will fall into your lap in this place by a placid bay.

The near demise of the annual and much loved Wheeler Crab Festival is almost one of those interesting stories. The Wheeler Business Association didn’t have enough people to spearhead and organize the event, so the Nehalem Bay Winery stepped in.
The result is a reorganized, bigger and better event, where the Nehalem Bay Winery is providing a wide variety of beverages and Pacific Seafood is providing not only crab dinners but a lot of scrumptious seafood. Live music is on hand, as well as an array of crafts. The Wheeler Crab Festival happens June 16 and 17. Hours are 12 - 8 on Saturday and 12 - 5 on Sunday. The family-friendly festival is free.

Giant crabs attack Nehalem Bay - film at 11 |
“The WBA didn’t have enough people to do it this year,” said Nehalem Bay Winery spokeswoman Melissa Stetzel. “So they asked us, and we said yes.”
The winery brought in Pacific Oyster to sell the food – the legendary, massive seafood production facility and restaurant that sits on its own pier in Bay City.
The winery will sell beer, wine and a vast array of other non-alcoholic beverages.
The vendor booths include popcorn, pies, metal sculpture, silver jewelry, wood carvings, painted handicrafts, and more, said Stetzel.

Pacific Oyster’s contributions to the event include steamed crab (half or whole), barbecued oysters, clam chowder, shrimp melts, crab melts, crab cocktails, shrimp cocktails, as well as hot dogs and hamburgers for the non-seafood crowd.
The steamed crab is already cooked but steamed there on the premises with salt water, garlic butter and coming with bread. Oysters are barbecued there in the great outdoors of the Nehalem Bay air, with touches of pesto, parmesan and Mexican hot sauce. The shrimp and crab melts sit between two scrumptious pieces of garlic bread and a special melted cheese recipe from Pacific Oyster.
The live music schedule on Saturday is: Denice Drake and Friends, Oyster Shooters, and Kid Siegel. Sunday the schedule is: Captain Craig and the Survivors.
The
festival happens at an interesting time for the winery, which had reevaluated
its reggae festival that was held every June. It was looking for something
else after opting to halt that festival. Again, another “Wheeler
Moment” for those in the area.
The
Wheeler Crab Festival happens on the waterfront in Wheeler, with the looming
presence of Neahkahnie Mountain in the distance, and the pristine Nehalem
Bay glistening in the sun (provided it’s a sunny day).
