Upscale Coastal Resort to be Renovated

(Cannon Beach, OR) - After 26 years of being one of the Oregon coast’s most spectacular lodgings, the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach is going under the knife with a large degree of renovations. The work, which includes a variety of changes in room layouts, furniture and color schemes, began in October and is expected to be completed in the spring.

When done, Surfsand rooms will feature private decks, hardwood floors and spa-style bathrooms with ocean-view tubs. They will also have cordless telephones, Wi-Fi Internet access and flat panel LCD TV’s.

Some furniture changes will occur as well, said Martin Hospitality publicist Lori McKeon.

The re-design is being done by Georgia Pope of Hill Devine Design, whose innovations includes subtle earth tones, such as sand, beach grass and driftwood, combined with forest green carpets, and curtains in rust and pistachio.

The strategy is to create circular patterns in each of the 72 rooms which echo the patterns of the ocean.

"Our goal is to create a warm, fun feeling," said Pope. "On gray, rainy days, we want guests to feel warm and cozy while sitting by the fire. In the summer, the rooms will feel light, comfortable and welcoming."

"By changing layouts, colors and design, the company's goal is to ‘bring the outside in,’ " said Surfsand General Manager Chad Sweet. "The new design will allow our guests to better appreciate the natural beauty of the coast. It's all about rest and relaxation."

The Surfsand Resort is known for its high-end service and innovative events, which include beachside cabana services, special trips for whale watching, surfing and hiking, as well as festivals like the "Dog Show at the Beach" or the “Puffin Kite Festival.”

More renovations will continue in September of 2006, overhauling the ocean-side north wing of the building, enhancement of the pool and spa. Two new buildings are planned for the facility as well, which will boast two-bedroom suites with full kitchens and fireplaces.
