Razor
Clamming Ban Lifted on Most of North Oregon Coast
(Oregon Coast) – Just in time for the big weekend getaway
to the Oregon coast, a ban on razor clamming has been lifted for
most of the Oregon coast.
State officials say the toxin levels south of Tillamook
Head, in Cannon Beach, have decreased enough to open clamming back
up to the public for any area south of – and including - Cannon
Beach.
State fish and
agriculture officials tested samples of razor clams dug from beaches
south of Tillamook Head and found levels below the warning level
of 20 parts per million.
Officials
say domoic acid levels are still somewhat high north of Seaside,
although all beaches north of Tillamook Head to the Washington border
are under an annual closure to protect juvenile clams anyway.
This means all beaches in Oregon south of Cannon
Beach are open to clamming again after being closed earlier this
summer, when all beaches north of Florence were shut down to the
activity.
Domoic acid occurs naturally in clams, and is produced
by marine phytoplankton or algae. It is not neutralized by cooking
or any other means of sterilization, and can cause severe illness,
even death.
Beaches are closed to all digging when domoic acid
levels climb above 20 ppm, which provides a margin of safety before
toxins can reach a higher level that may cause illness.
Call the recorded shellfish Hotline for more information:
(800) 448-2474.
