Oregon Coast Tourist
Attraction, Hotels, Win National Honors

Ocean Lodge |
(Oregon Coast) – It’s been a banner summer
for tourist attractions on the Oregon coast. Two high-profile lodgings
in Cannon Beach and one major attraction in Newport have landed in the
national spotlight in a most favorable way.
Cannon Beach’s The Ocean Lodge was named one of the
nation’s top ten pet destinations by TripAdvisor.com, the nearby
Stephanie Inn has been nominated for an award by Conde Nast Traveler and
the famous Oregon Coast Aquarium was called one of the country’s
top ten aquariums by Parents Magazine.

Travel
site TripAdvisor.com recently announced the results of its annual traveling
with pets survey of more than 1,100 travelers in the U.S. and worldwide.
It found that 53 percent of respondents with pets travel with their collared
companions. Americans (56 percent) are more likely to travel with their
pets, compared to 41 percent of travelers from the U.K.
Respondents also named their favorite top 10 pet friendly
accommodations. Cannon Beach’s The Ocean Lodge won spot number five
in that survey. Not quite top dog, but Escape Lodging president Patrick
Nofield told BeachConnection.net in a brief email that he was ecstatic.

Cannon Beach |
TripAdvisor’s accolades read: “Spoil your pet
at the Ocean Lodge with oceanfront views of the Oregon coast. With a private
deck, easy beach access, pet packages, and even a dog wash in the front
lawn, the hardest part will be leaving. As one TripAdvisor traveler said,
‘If you are looking for a place that is on the ocean and takes dogs,
this is as good as it gets.’ “
The
others in the list included TierraLinda Bed and Breakfast, Galena, Illinois
(spot number one), The Sleepy Dog Guest House, Bisbee, Arizona (number
two), Gazebo Inn Ogunquit, Ogunquit, Maine (number three) and Spruce Moose
Lodge and Cottages, North Conway, New Hampshire (number four). The only
other winner on the west coast was Cambria Shores Inn of Cambria, California.

Another survey by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine showered
honors on Cannon Beach’s The Stephanie Inn, nominated for Best Mainland
United States Hotel in the 20th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

Questionnaires were randomly delivered to over 28,000 subscribers
and online readers. Only candidates that received a required minimum number
of responses were considered eligible for an award. Readers were polled
about such features as comfort, staff, location and amenities. The Stephanie
Inn was recognized for comfortable rooms, beautiful views of Haystack
Rock and exceptional dining at the onsite restaurant, the Stephanie Inn
Dining Room.
Stephanie
Inn is owned by Martin Hospitality of Cannon Beach.
In Newport, it’s happy times for the Oregon Coast
Aquarium, which won another major honor in the national press in July.
Parents Magazine put it in the top ten aquariums in the U.S., amidst others
like SeaWorld in San Diego, Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California,
the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Florida Aquarium in Tampa, and Boston’s
New England Aquarium.

The Aquarium was lauded for its natural setting, interactive
displays, touch pool and Passages of the Deep, an exhibit that runs through
a 200 foot underwater tunnel with live sharks, rays and skates. The article
also highlighted the Aquarium’s educational programs including its
educator-led kayak tours and school lab programs.
The
Oregon Coast Aquarium is the only aquarium on the list not located in
or near a major metropolitan area.
“Our location is both an advantage and a challenge,”
said Aquarium President Dale Schmidt. “The beautiful setting is
a little off the beaten path, which makes it all the more incredible that
we continue to draw people from all over the world and receive national
attention for the quality of our exhibits and educational programs.”
In
developing its top ten rankings, Parents Magazine relied on site visits
to the top aquariums, the recommendations of an expert panel and the results
of an exhaustive survey that evaluated the number, creativity and educational
aspect of each aquarium’s interactive features. It also graded the
aquariums on the quality and kid-friendliness of their exhibits, services
(like changing stations), staff and educators, special programs for groups
and families, and conservation efforts.
In addition to recognition from Parents Magazine,
the Aquarium was recently featured in MSN City Guides’ “Nation’s
Coolest Creatures” with a page and photo about the Aquarium’s
wolf-eels.
