Holiday Brings High Surf and Flood Advisories to Oregon Coast

(Oregon Coast) – It’s going to be a foamy, sudsy and wet Christmas on the coast, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a high surf warning and a flood warning for Monday.
The advisories are for the southern Washington coast as well as most of the Oregon coast. The high surf advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. on Monday to midnight on Monday night. The flood advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday.

Large swells are expected to arrive on the coast throughout Monday. Seas will reach 20 to 23 feet high that day, before subsiding below the 20-foot level later in the evening.

“A very high tide of around 11 feet will occur along the south Washington and north and central coast around noon on Monday,” the NWS said in a bulletin. “The high tide, combined with high river levels, will allow minor flooding to occur along low lying areas on the coast. Areas affected by the coastal flood advisory include the vicinity of bays, estuaries and sloughs and portions of Highway 101, and the lower reaches of coastal rivers.”
This means river areas along the central coast to look out for include the Suislaw River in Florence, the Alsea River in Waldport, and the Siletz River and bay around Lincoln City.
Extremely high tides are again expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, around noon.

A high surf advisory means that high waves will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion. The NWS also said a coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.

These conditions will likely create quite a spectacle for stormwatchers – an understandably perfect way to spend Christmas. But it creates the need for major warnings.
It seems like every year someone does something just shy of common sense and gets hurt during a winter storm. Always stay away from small beaches when the storms are doing their thing. Some sandy spots, like Seaside, are broad enough to go walking on, and they can give you room to stay away from the breakers. One rule of thumb for exploring even large beaches in this weather: you need to have a good 50 feet between you and the highest wave. Otherwise, don't go near the beach and stay up high.

Other spots aren't even good for watching from beyond the seawall, like Lincoln City's D River Wayside or the main wayside in Rockaway. If waves are slamming up near the wall, stay far back, because the ocean can easily toss huge logs over the wall.
Whatever you do, if officials have closed off an area because of high waves, don't go beyond it. A few years ago, a group of stormwatchers ignored such signs near Garibaldi, and found themselves swimming in a sneaker wave - along with their vehicles. One woman was seriously injured.
