Lunar Eclipse Wows on Oregon Coast

(Manzanita, Oregon) - This weekend’s lunar eclipse made a particularly big splash on the Oregon coast, with the kind of crystal clear skies that only this region can provide, making for exceptional viewing.
In Astoria, Seaside Aquarium’s Tiffany Boothe sauntered up to the Astoria Column, on top of Coxcomb Hill, to take in the wild sights. Wandering around until 5 a.m. yielded some other interesting sights.

“There were a few people around,” she said. “Some were definitely looking at the eclipse. Others, I’m not sure about. Some were just a little creepy.”
Boothe took a series of exceptional shots of the event.
“I
was there for hours, it seemed,” she said. “Finally the moon
was totally covered, and it was red forever. I kept waiting for it to
change. It was driving me crazy. So I gave up for a while, and eventually
got this shot of a moonset in the west, over the ocean.”
In Manzanita, BeachConnection.net staff watched it for a little while from the cliffs above the beach. There, the moon shimmered in the water in a most spectacular way.
“There were quite a few people wandering around at this time,” said BeachConnection.net editor Andre’ Hagestedt. “It was about two a.m., and I saw a few fires on the beach, and several people driving around or standing around, looking up. You could see a few balconies up on the hills of Manzanita had telescopes up and ready.”
Hagestedt
stayed up just long enough to see the moon almost completely covered.
“I got really tired and just had to go to bed close to 3 a.m.,”
he said. “So I didn’t see it all red like Tiffany did.”
More astronomical events are in store for this weekend, with the Aurigid meteor showers likely to create a major stir in the skies. Prime viewing will be from 4:06 a.m. to 5:06 a.m. on Saturday morning, before dawn, although the sunrise and presence of the moon may make seeing the display a little more difficult. However, some astronomers are predicting it could yield as many as 2000 meteors in that time period, often with dazzling colors.
