Oregon Coast Ship from Discovery Channel Returns Home
(Astoria, Oregon)
– As much of Oregon ogles Portlander Storm Large on the “Rock
Star: Supernova” TV show, a somewhat unsung Oregon hero of
the seas returns home from their two years of fame on another kind
of reality series.

An Oregon coast
celebrity returns to port Tuesday when the FV Maverick, one of the
ships featured in the last two years on the Discovery
Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” series, comes
home to Astoria.
The crew is currently
journeying to their homeport, and are extending an invitation to
the public to come and be part of their welcome home celebration.
Meet the crew, Captain Rick and Boat Mom Donna, and listen to some
sea worthy stories as they reminisce about the past seasons. Drawings
will be held to win an official Maverick crewmember work coat and
other Maverick memorabilia.
The crew was
originally scheduled to have their homecoming party on Monday, but
inclement weather has delayed them a day. The party begins at noon
at the Port of Astoria.
DIVE
INTO LUXURY, HISTORY AT THE TIDES
THE
TIDES BY THE SEA, Seaside. For over 80 years, The Tides
has been a favorite of Seaside visitors. History meets modern
luxury here. 51 oceanfront condos, individually owned and
decorated. Find suites for couples, small apartments with
fireplaces and kitchenettes, one or two bedroom family units
with fireplaces, kitchens and dining rooms. There are wonderful
oceanview cottages that sleep anywhere from two to eight people,
with two bedrooms, some with lofts, fireplaces and kitchens.
Meanwhile, the heated outdoor pool, enormous grounds with
picnic tables and location at the quiet southern end of Seaside
make for some memorable means of play and repose. 2316 Beach

“It’s
not just a job, it’s an adventure,” said Captain Rick
Quashnick, the owner of the FV Maverick. A second-generation fisherman,
Rick grew up in Astoria, Oregon, where he started captaining his
first ship when he was 13 years old.
Rick admits to being
a "very competitive person," and he describes the fishing
lifestyle as such: "It takes long hours to be successful, the
money is good, and the competition is what keeps people in it."
The Maverick is a 92-foot
house aft boat that holds between 100-110 pots, and sleeps between
nine and 10 people. It is one of the smallest boats in the fleet
on the show, but it catches just as much as the big guns.
Rick is extremely devoted
to his crew. Instead of selling his quota this year and putting
his crew out of work, he chose to continue fishing.
Boat Mom Donna Quashnick,
Rick's wife, is the "mom" of the crew. She buys the groceries,
cooks the meals, and keeps her guys alive and well.
Other
crewmembers include 26-year-old engineer Blake Painter, 27-year-old
Mike Johnson, and deckhands Justin Gifford (age 27) and Hiram Johnson
(age 51).
The FV Maverick
has launched a new seafood line as they begin to market fresh Alaskan
King Crab and Halibut here on the north coast. For more information
on Maverick Seafood call 1-877-408-CRAB (2722) or check out the
new website at www.maverickseafood.com.
