| Stormwatchers brave high winds and rain in Manzanita |
(Oregon Coast) – Sunday’s storm turned out to be a non-issue for the Oregon coast, even with a high wind watch turning into a high wind warning. That has now expired, and although this storm carried little punch, the coastal region is bracing for a series of storms throughout the next week which could turn out some heavy-handed winds.
In the early afternoon, San Dune Inn owner Brian Hines was reporting from his little corner of the north coast, in Manzanita. “Nothing right now,” Hines said. “On and off minor gusts, intermittent light rain – that’s about it so far.”
Tourists and locals were out playing on the beaches, which encountered not much more than 40 mph gusts – barely considered a storm by coastal standards.
Some rain hit the region, as it did in Portland, but nothing substantial in that realm, either.

In Newport, beach expert Guy DiTorrice noted primarily the same thing all day that Hines did. “A little rain showers,” DiTorrice said. “Some wind, although nothing over 30 mph.”

But the waves were making a bit of a show, pleasing at least a few stormwatchers.
“Surf looks nice,” DiTorrice said. “Must be stuff offshore that's kicking it up.”
DiTorrice hit the sands for some beachcombing, and noticed some erosion happening already.
“Have seen some sand movement off the mid-tide areas
of a few Newport-area beaches,” DiTorrice said. “Finding a
wide range of color for agates and jaspers.”
Indeed, DiTorrice had it right about something offshore kicking the surf
up: another storm system is on its way and scheduled to hit the Oregon
coast on Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch for late Monday night through Tuesday morning.
Sustained winds from the south of 35 to 45 mph could happen, along with the possibility of gusts around 65 mph. The NWS said the winds will be at their strongest at the higher elevations, which will affect driving in the coast range.
“Please be aware that trees and structures along the coast that sustained damage during last week’s storm may be more vulnerable to further damage,” the NWS said in a bulletin.

At least a couple more storm systems are expected to hit the coastline for the next week, which will likely bring more wind watches and possibly even high wind warnings.
Again, it’s likely these will be good opportunities to play hooky from work and head out to the higher beach accesses to watch the tidal melee. Stay clear of the beaches and cliff ledges themselves during such storms, and stick to higher vantage points like parking lots or concrete structures which overlook the surf.
Keep
safety in mind first.
A good example of such places to watch these storms – for safety reasons and for the most dramatic show - includes Nye Beach or Yaquina Head in Newport, Seal Rock near Waldport, the highway turnouts between Yachats and Florence, D River Wayside in Lincoln City, Cape Meares near Oceanside, the road skirting Manzanita’s beaches and the constructed overlooks at the Columbia jetty. Several beach spots just south of Cannon Beach provide lots of wave action and safe viewing from a distance, such as Hug Point, Arcadia State Park and numerous pullouts along the highway, as well as the road that runs along the shoreline in Yachats.
