Oregon Coast Aquarium Throws out the 'Claws'
for the Oddwater
![](aqu_lionfish.jpg) |
Lionfish, one of the freaky fish that will be featured in 'Oddwater'
in summer of '08 |
(Newport, Oregon) – The Oregon Coast Aquarium's "Claws"
exhibit of crusty crustaceans is soon coming to a close, and something
odd will take its place. Staff will begin dismantling the Claws exhibit
on January 7 to make way for a new exhibit, Oddwater, slated to open Memorial
Day weekend, 2008.
As that name implies, Oddwater will feature encounters
with the strange marine life that lurks beneath the waves of the Oregon
coast. There are many unique and wonderful life forms that live in the
ocean, and Oddwater will take a look at some of the more fascinating among
them and show how their unusual adaptations help them survive.

"The Claws exhibit has been a tremendous success for
the Aquarium," said Carrie Lewis, Aquarium Marketing Director. "It
has been a lot of fun for visitors and we have really enjoyed showcasing
the exhibit."
Lewis
said one of the most popular components to the exhibit has been the dance
floor, which has offered a chance to learn how to "do the crab dance"
to a video that comes complete with animated crab characters. Horseshoe
crabs in a specially built overhead display has been another popular feature,
one that has enabled visitors to see creatures' most interesting features
- which underneath them.
Claws was sponsored by Charter Communications, Spirit Mountain
Community Fund and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. The Aquarium
also expressed gratitude to the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission and the
local fishing industry for providing materials about Newport's history
of the crabbing industry in the exhibit.

Lincoln
City Vacation Homes
Something for everyone: smaller homes
with a view to a large house that sleeps 15. All are either oceanfront
or just a few steps away – all with a low bank access and
fantastic views. Most are in the Nelscott area; one is close to
the casino. You’ll find a variety of goodies: fireplaces,
multiple bedrooms, dishwashers, Jacuzzis, washer/dryers, hot tubs,
cable TV, VCR, barbecues; there’s a loft in one, and another
sprawling home has two apartments. Pets allowed in some homes
– ask first. Each comes with complete kitchens. Most have
seventh night free. Prices range from winter $85 to summer $230
per night. www.getaway2thecoast.com.

"Oddwater will be as colorful and engaging as Claws,
with interactive components and colorful wall murals depicting the different
species and their habitats from artist Michael Cole," Lewis said.
Some of
the species featured in Oddwater will include the cuttlefish, an animal
with green blood, three hearts and the ability to change color in a flash.
Another Oddwater species, the chambered nautilus, will be noticed for
its unusual movement using "jet propulsion" by alternately pulling
water into the mantle cavity within the shell and blowing it out the siphon
beneath the tentacles. The amazing flashlight fish will be an Oddwater
star with its glowing eyes. Bacteria that live in a sac under the eyes
make the flashlight fish glow. This bright light can be seen at night
up to 100 ft away and is said to be the brightest glow produced by any
known living organism.
One
of the more unusual aspects of Oddwater is the blown art glass, provided
by The Edge Art Gallery, which will sit inside the tanks of some of the
displays - a perfect complement to the strange and beautiful creatures
of Oddwater. Two "Stay Tuned" displays on exhibit now offer
a glimpse of what’s in store with Oddwater. To date, this exhibit
is sponsored by Spirit Mountain Community Fund, Rose E. Tucker Charitable
Trust, Trust Management Services, LLC, the Jackson Foundation and the
Siletz Tribal Contribution Fund, which will provide funds for interactive
graphics.
