Oregon Coast Expects Warm, Sunny Weather All Week
(Oregon
Coast) – Weeks of storms and rain have pelted Oregon’s
coastline recently, making for weary residents. But this week the
area is expected to be the recipient of more than seven days worth
of sunny skies and moderate temperatures, and with it comes the
expectation of a lot of visitors.

Forecasters
say the Oregon coast is in for a decent stretch of lovely weather,
probably lasting through the weekend. Highs are predicted to be
near or just above 60 degrees, and the skies should be mostly clear
and sunny throughout the week.
It
will likely be warmer than inland most of the time. That, coupled
with little or no winds, will often make things feel just a little
tropical on the beaches.
Fultano’s
Pizza in Cannon Beach has already brought out the patio furniture.
“There
were already out this morning,” owner David Johnson said Monday.
“It’s beautiful out here.”
Old
Wheeler Hotel owner Winston Laszlo was relieved with this new
weather pattern, and was excited at the possibilities of what conditions
and sights it could mean for Wheeler.
“We're
liking the sunshine and dry weather,” Laszlo said. “It
adds to the wildlife viewing out the windows of the hotel to Nehalem
Bay. We're hoping we can fire up our air conditioners if the warm
temperatures continue.”

Seaside,
on a warm February day in 2003 |
In
Seaside, Mike Exinger is looking
forward to the weekend, as his Zinger’s
Homemade Ice Cream shop is very dependent on weather. “Sunny
days mean ice cream,” Exinger said. “Although, did you
know that Alaskans eat more ice cream per person than any one else?”
Exinger
enjoys playing with visitors just a little bit when it comes to
weather. “When it’s nice like this, people who are first
timers will ask ‘and what’s it like during the summer?’
“ We tell them ‘Just about like it is now.’“
In Manzanita, Brian Hines of San
Dune Inn is already several steps ahead of many other coastal
businesses when it comes to weather. His motel has a load of games
and movies for indoor play, but conversely he carries a small fleet
of bikes and outdoor game equipment for the good weather.
“Our
outside chairs and barbecue area stay out year round, even if we
have to recover them from a couple of blocks away every now and
again,” Hines said. “I’m looking also looking
forward to drying out and cleaning up a bit, plus tending to the
landscaping, which has been impossible to do.”
Kelly
Garret, owner of Newport kids clothing shop Bambini,
said she’s going to take advantage of the good weather to
move her shop up the street a few doors.
Nearby,
at Newport hotel Starfish
Point, Danielle Emerick said the outdoor chairs are coming out.
She added things are very different at Agate Beach these days because
of the storms, and this weather is double the reason to come and
explore that area.
“Agate
Beach has changed drastically, especially on the north end, with
a major shift in the accessibility for beachcombers,” Emerick
said. “There are now agates on Agate Beach again.

Agate
Beach, with Nye Beach in the distance |
“Big
Creek, which had been cutting off access to the beach for many residents
and businesses, including us, has experienced some big changes.
Big Creek was about half way between our place and the Yaquina Head
headland before the last storm on Friday night. And it’s now
turning out to the ocean about one quarter to half a mile south
of where it was on Friday night. Now residents and businesses from
about the middle of Agate Beach all the way to the north have easier
access to the entire beach area.
“There
is a great deal of debris on Agate Beach and we have found many
floats there. We found three glass floats, and around 15 –
20 other types of floats (plastic and Styrofoam) in a variety of
sizes and shapes. Many of the plastic floats have Asian writing
on them. Some of the Styrofoam floats are from fishing boats.”
This
weather pattern is not atypical for the Oregon coast in February.
In fact, it's rather well known among regulars to the coast and
residents that this time of year can yield warmer than usual conditions
for slightly longer periods. See the article
on "Winter Weather Secrets" from Beach Connection.
Coastal
businesses are already expecting larger numbers this coming weekend
because of Valentine's Day. They say this weather will mean an even
bigger boost in visitors.
If
you're heading to the coast on the weekend, it is advisable to make
lodging reservations ahead of time.
