Big Winds, Surf Ready to Wow Oregon Coast

(Oregon Coast) – A high wind warning is now in effect
for the Oregon coast and the coast range, promising sustained winds around
40 mph and gusts as high as 70 on the beaches and headlands.
It presents uneasiness for those on the coast who still
have trees around them that were weakened in the big melee at the beginning
of the month, but to most it’s yet another opportunity to watch
a big winter storm take a dramatic swat at the coastline.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the wind warning,
in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, with substantial winds
expected to continue throughout the day, until they die down in the early
evening.
“Another strong front will push across the coastal
waters late on Tuesday and early Wednesday, with main low pressure tracking
into Vancouver Island during the day Wednesday,” the NWS said in
a bulletin. “Winds will increase after midnight and continue windy
throughout the day.”

Big waves batter Rockaway Beach, knocking large logs around |
South winds of 25 to 45 mph should happen during the early
morning hours, while wind gusts could reach up to 60 to 70 mph. “Sustained
winds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property
damage,” said the NWS.
In the coast range, such as highways 26 or 18, countless
trees are still bent over and weakened by the wind, many near the roadways.
The high wind warning for those areas is from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday,
affecting towns like Jewell, Vernonia, Grande Ronde, Tidewater, Ryderwood,
Hebo and Swisshome.

Gusts up to 65 mph could develop on the ridges and summits
of those highways.
Whatever the case, most people on the Oregon coast are
happy to see it coming.
“The ocean is wicked looking right now,” said
Kevin Winter, manager of D Sands
Condominium in Lincoln City. All his rooms are oceanfront, which promises
an astounding view of the tidal madness that will happen on this wide
stretch of beach.

Large surf near Depoe Bay |
“This is a great time for storm watching,”
said Liberty Inn manager Connie
Barradas, also in Lincoln City.
Many valley residents have been staying away from the coastline
because of a misconception about how conditions are there, after the flurry
of news coverage of the storm and its aftermath have left standing impressions
in their minds.
These are misconceptions say Barradas and Winter, who say
the central coast was back up and running full speed after just a day
or two. The north coast got back to normal about six days after the storm.
![](winds_291p_perpet.jpg) |
Cape Perpetua, where the waves do some spectacularly crazy things |
“All roads to Lincoln City are open,” Winter
said. “Now is a great time to come to the beach.”
The
D Sands Wayside, next to Winter’s motel, is one of those outstanding
yet safe spots to watch the winter action. Other great such spots where
the wave drama is high and yet so is the margin of safety include all
the many highway pullouts between Florence and Yachats, the Seaside Promenade,
Nye Beach’s Turnaround, Seal Rock State Park, the road next to the
beach in Manzanita, the cliffs of Cape Meares, and the higher parking
lot areas of Hug Point or Arcadia State Park near Cannon Beach.
Spots like Oceanside or Cannon Beach’s Tolovana
area could pose dangers of waves tossing objects onto the parking lot,
so it’s best to stay away from those if the tide is anywhere near
the barriers.
