Father’s
Day Preview for Oregon Coast
|
15th
St. Ramp, Lincoln City |
(Oregon Coast)
– There are a bundle of events and specials that happen all
along the coast in honor of dear old Dad. From reggae, jam rock,
special lodging deals and a crab festival to finding edibles in
tide pools, there’s much going for those who want to treat
Dad to something a little more interesting than the average Sunday
brunch.
In Lincoln City, on June
17, you can get lessons from the “Wild Gourmet” on how
to find yummy stuff almost anywhere in nature. Lee Gray will be
on hand at the Connie Hanson Garden Festival that day, giving his
class called “Tide Pool Edibles.”
From kelp to seaweed,
from bivalves to crustaceans, professional Chef Lee Gray will help
you identify edible species of ocean inter-tidal plant and animal
life. He will take you on an expedition to examine tide pools and
to learn proper harvesting techniques at 10 a.m. on the NW 15th
Street Beach Access, followed by a cooking demonstration on proper
preparation of the edibles he gathered. The demonstration will be
held at the Connie Hanson Garden at 1931 NW 33rd at 12:30 p.m. 541-994-6338.

Sandcastles
in Cannon Beach, June 17 |
There’s
a lot going on around the north Oregon coast that weekend –
most notably the Cannon Beach Sandcastle contest on June 17.
On Saturday, June 17
and Sunday, June 18, the Wheeler CrabFest takes grabs a lot of attention
on the north Oregon coast, going from 11:30 until 7 p.m. It boasts
a menu that includes fresh crab cooked on the spot, accompanied
by shrimp cocktail and side dishes, all served up by Wheeler’s
friendly troupe of volunteers. There is a popular children’s
menu with iced drinks available.
The
all-day live music begins at noon, provided by Kid Siegel, L.E.
Bender, Banjo 2 and Jeff Brown and Friend. Vendors will be setting
up tents and offering arts and crafts at an open-air market in the
park. 503-368-6881.
After that festival
closes down on Saturday, nearby Nehalem Bay Winery hosts its annual
Juneteenth Reggae Festival, beginning at 6 p.m. The show starts
with Chata Addy and Shi Dah, and Portland’s Rhythm Culture
rounds things out at 8 p.m. There will be lots of barbecued goodies,
wine, beer and lots of Red Stripe Beer. Admission is $8 –
children are free. Addy will be hosting a special drumming workshop
at 4:30 p.m. Cost for that is $15. Nehalem Bay
Winery, Highway 53, just east of Nehalem. 888-368-9463.
Around 9 p.m.,
Portland jam band Red Rubber
Band performs at the San Dune Pub in Manzanita, with its raucous
mix of jam, world music and funk and jazz. Cover charge. (503) 368-5080.
In Cannon Beach, Dooger’s
