Portland
Groovesters Play the Oregon Coast This Summer
(Manzanita,
Oregon) - You could call it “jam fusion.”
There’s
a lot more to Portland’s Red Rubber Band than being a jam
band – a lot more. Red Rubber Band is a snappy combination
of driving rock, psychedelic pop, soul, touches of jazz and, of
course, the occasional free flowing vibe of Phish and the Grateful
Dead. Give the band’s fabulous and varied self-titled debut
CD a listen and you’ll notice immediately Red Rubber Band
stretches its stylistic reaches far and wide.
The band performs
at the San Dune Pub in Manzanita
on June 17. They also perform there on July 29.
Musically speaking,
Red Rubber Band is a large and welcoming place, one where rock ‘n’
roll and pop are encompassed by the nearly boundless territory of
jam band aesthetics, creating a varied and diverse landscape. It
is very much a fusion of styles – a true “jam fusion.”
One song is
a fiery number sung in Spanish, propelled by a Flamenco-style guitar
and background. Another features a Steely Dan-like keyboard racing
the song through jazz-tinged funk. One minute you’re bouncing
to the groove of a poppy tune or an upbeat rocker, the next you’re
wandering through the haze of a slow, Pink Floyd-like psychedelia.
Periodically, you witness moments of classic Dead splendor, laced
with bluegrass or blues.
Four of the
five members of Red Rubber Band share the vocal and songwriting
duties, creating the vast array of styles you’ll find here.
Guitarist Chris Congdon, guitarist Buckster, keyboardist Scott Snow
and bassist Mr. E all take the mic at one point, while drummer Doug
Van Buskirk anchors the beat behind them with groovy verve and finesse.
The band was
formed in 2001 by Congdon and Buckster, who both come from a long
lineage of fine local outfits, including names like Band of People,
Self Indulgence, Absolute Everywhere and The Mother Tones. Both
brought some of their older material to the band as well as writing
new songs for it. The band played around Oregon beginning in 2003
as Lost and Found, but changed the name to Red Rubber Band in 2004.
